LOWSONFORD CLASS VISIT FROM THE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOODS TEAM

Capture.JPG

On Tuesday 8th June, two police officers came in to see Year 6 and talk to us about keeping safe at secondary school, being responsible, and a very serious crime called Hate Crime.

The officers made us play a game called ‘Sophie’ where we had teams and lots of cards with different people on them, and we chose five to be in our team.  Then we discussed why we did not choose the other people, and after that we were given an imaginary project for the team to complete and a chance to choose different people for that project once we knew more about them all. Some of us were surprised that we had discriminated against people because of the way they looked but they actually had lots of talents when we found out more about them.

Finally, we learned the meaning of Sophie – Sophie was an actual person who died because of discrimination and hate crime. She was judged and badly treated because of the way she looked.

We also asked questions about how to stay safe when we are out and about without an adult; how to get help if we are in trouble or feel afraid; and what life is like in the police force.

After our session with the Safer Neighbourhoods Team we made posters and leaflets to explain to other Year 6 children how to stay safe and get help if needed.

In conclusion, we learned about hate crime but also had a good, fun time!

SPORTS MORNING - Friday 2nd July 2021

After much consideration, we regret that we are unable to invite parents into school for our traditional sports morning and family picnic. We understand this is a longstanding Ferncumbe tradition and will be of huge disappointment, but the safe management of the large numbers on site is a risk in the current climate. The children will still enjoy a sports morning on Friday 2nd July - we will ensure that there are plenty of photos, so do keep an eye on the class Twitter pages!

Hatton (Reception) Class’ virtual assembly will go ahead as scheduled on Friday 2nd July at 9.30am. Mrs Stephenson will be in touch with details. Reception children will still be able to take part in the sports morning, following their assembly.

anti-bullying ambassador training

During the Spring term, when we were in lockdown, Wroxall Class took part in some virtual Anti-bullying Ambassador training. We also wrote leaflets to tell everyone about bullying and what to do if someone is getting bullied. Year 5 also led an anti-bullying assembly for the whole school to tell everyone all about bullying and what to do if they are being bullied and what we can do as Anti-bullying Ambassadors.

Honiley Class have been very busy in our garden. With Tamson's help, they have planted pumpkin plants and sweetcorn. The children used the leaflets they created during lockdown based on their learning from ‘Pattan's Pumpkin’ on how to grow a pumpkin. We can't wait to see how they grow!

Forest School is a wonderful opportunity for the children at Ferncumbe to explore their senses, engage and understand nature and the environment whilst promoting and encouraging independence, perseverance and trusting their instincts whilst discovering and exploring the outdoor world around them.

Wow! What a fabulous, flurry of Forest School activities we have had. Reception (Hatton), Year 1 (Haseley) and Year 3 (Rowington) have engaged in a range of thrilling sessions including; team building skills, life cycles of plants and animals, exploring different trees & properties of their leaves, shelter building, ropes and knots.

Gratitude goes to the trustees of Home Farm, Hatton for allowing us to use their private land, to our wonderful and dedicated team of parent volunteers, former Ferncumbe pupil Joshua Sloan and Mike Preston for his time and support.

We look forward to updating you with more Forest School opportunities for the next academic year.

message from the friends of ferncumbe

We really appreciate your support in raising funds for the Friends of Ferncumbe.  As you know, we spend the money we raise on a variety of enhancements to our children's education and enjoyment during their time at The Ferncumbe Primary School.

Unfortunately we've not been able to run a lot of the fundraising events that we normally do in the last year or so due to Covid, but did you know there are many ways to donate to Friends of Ferncumbe whilst shopping or by selling?

PayPal: You can support Friends of Ferncumbe when you shop online with PayPal.  Set us as your favourite charity, and you can choose to donate £1 whenever you checkout with PayPal.  You can get started here https://www.paypal.com/gb/fundraiser/charity/3185505

Ebay: Add us to “My Favourites” on your eBay account. They will personalise your shopping/selling experience to allow you to donate to us.  You can find us listed as "The New Friends of Ferncumbe School 1997"

AmazonSmile: Shop at smile.amazon.co.uk and Amazon will donate to your favourite charitable organisation, at no cost to you. It's the same products, same prices, same service but Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases. Simply shop at smile.amazon.co.uk instead of through amazon.co.uk and add Friends of Ferncumbe as your charity to support us.  Watch out though, you need to set up Amazon Smile on every device you use to shop with Amazon, it doesn't automatically feed through to all of your devices if you just set it up on one device 🙂

EasyFundraising: easyfundraising® is the UK’s biggest charity shopping fundraising site.  It's simple to use and it's free - no cost to you.  Most major retailers are part of the scheme and available to shop with via Easyfundraising.  All you do is find any retailer you wish to purchase from on easyfundraising's website or app, add Friends of Ferncumbe as your chosen charity and get shopping.  Easyfundraising then makes a donation from the retailer to Friends of Ferncumbe.  Find us here https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/foferncumbe/?q=friends%20of%20ferncumbe&cat=cause-autosuggest
