ferncumbe friday
friday 3rd December 2021
A reminder that we will be taking part in the national ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ on Friday 10th December 2021. Pupils are invited to wear a Christmas or Winter themed top to school, with their normal school skirt or trousers. Please don’t feel it necessary to go out and buy a new top - a home decorated one is absolutely fine!

Which surface has the most friction?
Year 5 had a great time exploring friction by testing different surfaces using their shoes and a Newton metre. We shared our ideas in groups about how to make the investigation fair. Each group chose 6 different surfaces to test. Every group worked brilliantly using a Newton metre, accurately reading the scale and recording their results. Sandpaper and grass proved to have the most friction. Corrugated plastic and the track proved to have the least friction.
The children have contributed to some fascinating discussions about how friction can be useful in real life situations. We talked about racing bikes compared to mountain bikes, reducing friction on a slide and how friction is essential to walking and running. Well done Year 5!

Rowington Class
Rowington have been busy creating Stone Henge silhouettes. Firstly, we began by painting our backgrounds using watercolours, some of us chose the night sky background and others chose sunrise/sunset. We then tore up bits of black paper to create our silhouettes.

Shrewley Class
Shrewley enjoyed a virtual visit to the British museum last week to learn more about Ancient Egypt.
We looked at different artefacts at the museum and discussed what we can learn about the Ancient Egyptian people from them. We also took on the role of ‘myth-busters’ and sought to separate fact from fiction! Our expert taught us about other civilisations in existence at the same time as Ancient Egypt and showed us artefacts as evidence for their influence. We had a go at selecting the best artefacts for an exhibit as well as exploring an Ancient Egyptian tomb. Our expert was very impressed with our knowledge from our topic so far!
