Ferncumbe Friday

Friday 13th July 2018

A spectacular friday!

Despite the sweltering temperatures, last Friday's morning of sport, family picnic and farmers' market were all fantastic successes! Thank you for your support, on what is always one of the most special days of the year.

poppy assembly

Last week we welcomed Mrs Edmonds (one of school's Foundation Governors and former Ferncumbe headteacher) and representatives from St Mary’s Church in Warwick, for a special assembly on the Poppy Appeal to mark the Centenary of the end of World War I.  As you may be aware, many schools, community groups and businesses have been designing and creating poppies to commemorate the end of World War I, and more importantly to remember and honour the 11, 610 soldiers who fought in the War from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. As you can see, KS2 pupils have also been very busy during their Enrichment sessions, beautifully sewing approximately 80 poppies for this Appeal - these have now been taken back to St Mary’s for display. The handcrafted poppies will be on public display from the beginning of October until mid December. A small selection of pupils from Ferncumbe will have the opportunity to attend a special service at St Mary’s Church during this time, however families are also encouraged to pay a visit themselves to mark such a significant event.  We understand that our Ferncumbe poppies will be displayed within the Beauchamp Chapel. Further information can be found here...

We give thanks to some of our Wroxall Class pupils who ended our assembly with a very sincere and meaningful prayer.

Parents were treated to a fantastic concert by our violinists and guitarists on Monday afternoon. Mrs Ransford, from Warwickshire Music, commented on the vast array of musical talent on display, and how impressed she was with the number of Ferncumbe musicians.

This summer, Miss Morris has set herself the challenge of cycling 1,000 miles from John O’Groats to Lands End. We all wish her lots of luck and sunny weather. You can also help spur her on by donating to her JustGiving page:

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sally-morris22

Any donations made will go to the Alzheimer’s Charity, a great cause which helps to transform people’s lives and is very close to Miss Morris’ heart. This will help to motivate her through the hills and British weather she might face!

Good Luck Miss Morris!

kitchen garden club news

At Kitchen Garden Club this week our KS1 pupils were joined by some very special guests – 3 grandads, one grandma and an uncle! They thought they had come to watch, but they were soon hard at work with the rest of the team, harvesting potatoes, carrots, salad crops and herbs, clearing soft fruit beds, herding chickens  !) and much more. But we didn’t let them go until we’d treated them to a tomato tasting and a helping of Sharon’s delicious strawberry & blueberry icecream made on the spot (well, in the library) just with frozen fruits and buttermilk. A big thank you to our visitors, pupils and staff, we all had a lot of fun and you’ve inspired us to do it again!

If there are any family members out there who would like to help out with the club, please contact the school office, extra hands are always welcome as it means we can do more activities and involve more children.
